Any being capable of learning will naturally hone their skills as they experience that which lies on their path through destiny.
More complicated beings, Angels, are beyond that simple rule. They may focus their attention towards a certain goal, in an effort to grow strong in a specific principle as well as overall. There are a great variety of these principles that affect combat prowess, and are further more divided by their corresponding Guardian Spirit.
An Angel may only become more disciplined with a spirit it he invoking. To check your current disciplines use the 'discipline' command.
Plain speak
Advancement within the Angels guild happens on two levels. Guild levels, or stations, advance automatically as an angel acquires experience in combat. The second level, disciplines, are a bit more complicated than that. When an Angel ventures out into the scapes to engage enemies, they first invokes a Guardian Spirit to aid in those struggles. Each spirit has five disciplines associated with it, and the Angel can choose to focus on any of the disciplines available to that spirit. So, while said angel acquires guild experience that will help him advance his stations, one of his spirit's disciplines also accrues experience and will level up over time.
Every discipline name is latin, and a cursory google dive will give you a good idea of what each does for you.
